Developing Technique?

hi, my question is when do u think big players like jaco start to find their techniques? I know they couldn't have just started the bass and recive some instant technique. I just wonder after how long did they develope one.

It probably depends on how much they practiced, doesn't it?

I agree with Lemur, it matters on how much one practices, but what do you mean by technique? One can start to develop technique the second they pick up an instrument for the first time.. but mastering technique and expanding onto others and incorporating their own style... that takes time, and it's what make musicians like Jaco shine.

I think he may mean style. Technique requires practice, but style comes along and one day you realize that you don't play like anyone else you've heard.

Maybe that is what he means. I guess that depends a lot on chance. You could play for years before the right thing inspired you and showed you the way to your thing.
