i actually do a lot of this disco octave stuff in church, odd place for it but you know...

the tricks i use to fight fatigue for that would be to:
a) relax as to not wear out your hand too much
b)bad technique but allow your thumb to float up to the top of the neck occasionally
c) let your thumb play the bass note and ring play the octave - switch between this and standard

also just practice til your hands get used to it

- there is a way to do the 14th on a 4 string but i dont have a camera around atm :P

And maybe even lower my action... I probably won't go for lower gauge strings though, I like 'em heavy.
In your profile I see you have two fretted basses - so you can:
- keep your mostly used bass with higher action and heavy gauge strings as you like it, and
- set the second bass for more comfortable playing - lower action, and/or lower gauge strings and use this bass for that difficult song.

Some people don't use their pinky because it is weak.

Some people have a weak pinky because they don't use it.

Some people practice.

I do this one a lot, actually. I use my thumb a lot on the E string- definitely not standard, but it's comfortable. If I'm playing something a little more technical, though, I try to do it standard, as throwing that thumb in there going fast can make things sloppy.

Just make sure that when your done with playing the low note to take that finger off the fretboard. Pivot using your thumb on the back of the neck to fret the high note
