do i have wierd fingers? (pic)

Sign in to disble this ad
alot of people say that my fingers are freakishly long. im starting to think they're right because ive read alot of threads about people who have troubly reaching everything on the bass, and ive had none of these problems, and have played a 6er near the top of the fretboard without difficulty. im not bothered about it, it has its benefits, but i just wanna know what you guys think.

They'll never be as long as John Myung's!

I have tiny hands and play bass fine. It's not the size of the prize that matters, it's the way you use em.

+1

I have fingers that aren't so long either, but I offset this by moving my hand to different positions accurately...it takes a while for it to feel natural (esp. if you are a "modal" player like me), but I actually prefer it to stretching and straining now that I'm used to it..

...the positions shifts start to become natural, much like the way a trombonist uses his "slide hand".

You don't really need long fingers to play bass, look at Wooten, his fingers are one of the shortest I've seen, yet hes one of the best bassists out there.

DUDE! You're a FREAK!!!

Just kidding. To all the guys saying that the length of your fingers doesn't affect your ability to play bass or guitar, that's ridiculous! Long fingers help quite a bit. It's like a tall basketball player. Sure, short guys can play, but tall guys have an advantage. My fingers are average length and the only trouble I have is reaching the G string with my right hand when my thumb is anchored to the pup. I'm working on letting my thumb float. That should help.

Hey, was it on SNL or In Living Color that they always made fun of Arsenio Hall's long fingers? That was awesome! (In a related note, I saw the first president Bush today at an Ethical Leadership Conference and he did an impression of Dana Carvey's impression of him saying "Not Gonna do it!" He was very cool and funny and he's 82 freakin' years old!)

Damn that guy...
For all the work that guy puts into his technique, his hand/pinky is in a weird position.

Im jealous....but then ive got stumpy hands like nothing on earth, and i still do ok on a bass. Youll still have to work on getting them strong and quick, but thats a pretty handy reach....pardon the pun.

My fingers are longer (or maybe my keyboard is smaller), but my fingers look less freaky than yours.

That's not wierd. I have long and skinnish fingers, so does Jaco, and so does Les Claypool, and I'm sure countless others too.

Jamerson had some monstrous long fingers. So did that guitar player... what was his name? Henderson... no... Oh yeah, Hendrix or something like that.
