I watch a lot of bass lessons on youtube, and the guys are all seated while teaching.
I have created my bass lines sitting down for songs, and then at band practice, I can't reproduce them while standing!
I can't see the fretboard very well when I stand!

If I'm just fingering through a song or something then I'm not against just chilling on the floor or something, but when I'm really practicing I like to stand up because that's how I really play.

My body just doesn't have the right proportions to sit and play at the same height as when i stand and play. |

So now I`m having to relearn how to play while standing lol. It`s not necessarily harder, just different. So ALL my practice time now is standing.

| | | | place your bass to replicate the same position sitting down or standing up.
I ajust my strap to place the bass exactly at the same place as when I'm playing sitting down. I don,t have any problem anymore |

I was thinking I need to stand near a tall counter so I can use my laptop /metronome, and have a place for my lyric/chord sheets, and my fret board diagram.
maybe partially sitting/leaning on a tall barstool will work. I'll try these ideas tomorrow. thanks!

| | | | I sit when I'm learning a song, but once I have it I practice standing up since I will almost certainly be required to perform it that way. |

I did it because I had the same problem many have expressed- it is difficult to play standing up if you do all your practicing sitting.

| | | | I used to sit all the time when I played but just recently I've been standing and it's really made a difference for me. I feel a lot more comfortable fingering when I standing and I tend to focus more. Only time I sit now is if I'm learning some new stuff that I need to take my time with.

| | poppin in the corn belt | | Join Date: Dec 2007 Location: A tank of gas from Chicago | | when I practice seated, I play with the bass between my legs and my left foot higher like a classical guitar stance. When I play standing my bass is in pretty much the same position. The classical guitar position is also great for good hand placement. I used to have tendonitis problems when I first started until I read up on classical guitar finger stretching and playing position in a very old book. I've played that way ever since and never experienced any more hand pain.
It's also important ( for me at least ) to have a wide and stable strap so that my bass fits me securely and I'm not trying to "hold" my bass with my hands while playing it.
Ps. I'm an exbodybuilder with a large chest... I can see the fretboard maybe try a different strap position.
Best of luck. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
