Question double bass learning affects my electric bass playing?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All

I recently bought a double bass, but I consider I dont know how to play. I bought it to try a little bit by myself, and at the first view I think I could do things. I don't want to be a master, neither a good contrabassist, but I'd like to be able to play a bit and play with somebody just easy songs. I have had first good vibrations with it, seems cool for me.

I am a bassist with more than 12 years of experience, and I play in several groups, etc. As I know double bass playing is thecnically different, I am wondering if by learning it, it will affect my thecnique with the electric, or if I could suffer fingering/coordination problems.

I'd like to know about your experiences, thoughts, or wisdom with this compatibility affair.

Thanky you all (sorry for my english)

Other than using the pinky to ply 5ths,I apply standard electic technique to the acoustic. It's limiting, but I too just want to able to play certain things well on the upright. I'm not looking to be Neils Pettiford. Playing upright can only help your electric playing.

I started playing the bass guitar at the age of 13, and four years later, I picked up the upright bass. My bass guitar playing really benefited from playing the upright. You get more strength in your hands, and you see your instrument from a different angle.

I suggest you should take some upright lessons, though, because it could really help you to get started quicker and better

I agree with above comments.

Me too would like to have one and learn to do it someday.

Your EB playing may improve dramatically. All my basses felt like short scales after learning upright.
