Double thumb cleanliness question

Sign in to disble this ad
Well I hate to post an other double thumb question but I'm getting a little frustrated with getting the answer for this one on my own.

And yes I've already seen the slap welcome party and it didn't really help me out either.

My problem is when I double thumb and then pluck (index then middle) no matter what string, my fingernails on my index and middle will touch the string adjacent to the string I'm about to pluck. This of course makes a faint "clicking" noise.

Also I can't really pull my index or middle finger underneath the string to pluck it beause my index(or middle) will push down the adjacent string with my first joint. This in effect causes the string to press against the last fret and create a very faint high pitched note.
So to remedy trying to pluck underneath the string I'm trying to just kinda pluck it from the side - similar to normal fingerstyle.(Though I'm having alot of trouble accomplishing this)

So basicly, I'm having trouble only touching the string to be played when I'm double thumbing and I can't find the right angle (thumb angle, plucking angle, wrist angle, arm angle, etc) to get a very clean double thumb.

Any suggestions? I'm prepared to provide audio clips if need be.

And for the record I'm playing a dingwall ab which has a relatively small string spacing at 18 mm.

sorry for the long post.

Try cutting your fingernails so they are really short.

What happens when you change the able you go thumb with? For instance instead of going down parallel to the string you go down at a bit of an angle so the plucking feels more natural?

My fingernails are always cut as short as they can go... I can't pick up coins off of flat surfaces
Its the middle of my fingernail that is tapping agains't the string.

As for different angles for my thumb.. I don't quite understand what you're trying to say, but I've tried many different angles as far as how my thumb attacks the string.. I've tried from going almost outwards(away from me) when I cross the string and then coming back in. to the exact opposite of going almost directly down onto the string with my thumb.
The latter being the most obvious wrong way because it forces the plucking fingers onto the other strings.

I feel this is getting very difficult to explain without pictures... so I'll see what I can do to take some pics.

Why don't you just put some medical tape(or something of that nature) over your middle finger so it doesn't make a noise when it hits the other string?

I don't use my fingernail when I come back up... And I don't think vic does either... He uses(as I do) the same portion of the thumb used when going down.
