Double Thumb Practice

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been playing bass for 4 years, and I am well aware of how to perform the double thumb slap technique. I was hoping some of you could recommend some songs (nothing too difficult to start with) or exercises that will help me refine this technique.

The best way i've found is to practice it with other t hings I practice, like scales and arpeggios.

Its not the double thumbing itself that gets me, its the popping afterwards.. I just cant do them both at once.

And try to play Victor's Classical Thump. Its my favorite for it.

Just practice triplets or whatever slowly. Try playing octaves, down, and up on the low note and pop the octave.

My bass instructor and I are working on this right now. He told me to just practice scales whilst double thumbing. Doing two things at once is awesome. I'm just starting to learn proper slap and double thumb, as well as scales, so it's a lot to do, but it's working.

ex. G Ionian

G|---------------4----5----7-----9----11------12-
D|-----5----7------------------------------------
A|------------22---33---55---77----99----1010----
E|--33---55--------------------------------------

-----DU P

D= down, U= Up, P = pluck

And as awesome of a practice that is, I found playing each root note 4 or so times made it easier, as you arent moving so fast. It gives you more focus on the DT and P, then changing your finger position.

But thats just me!

But thats an awesome example, Im doing it right now FYI.

The double pop is difficult for me. It's hard to find exercises that incorporate it
