Question Double Thumbing?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble learning how to do the double-thumb technique.
Any advice on getting it down would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

Mute the strings with your fretting hand. Try strumming any string with your thumb. As if you are playing a folk guitar. (Never played a folk guitar? Go to a music store, pick up a guitar & give your thumb a try. As a courtesy to others, mute the strings with your fretting hand. 8-)

If you want it louder turn up the amp volume. Playing harder with your thumb is more difficult to control. You can learn to pop the string with your thumb after you have a basic technique. Turn the volume way up & see how lightly you can play in control.

Turn on your metronome & double thumb each string twice before moving up/down one string. When that is comfy, do the same skipping a string. When that is comfy, repeat with the metronome going 8 bpm faster. Repeat again until you lose control. As time goes by you will be able to play a little faster just for trying to go too fast.

Do the entire exercise fretting notes rather than muting the strings.

Do you regularly catch your thumbnail? Learn to trim it so it doesn't catch. If you're healthy & don't smoke, you will probably need to trim the nail every other day or 2. If you can't trim the nail short enough, change the way you hold the bass or the length of the strap until you learn how to fit your body & hand to best play the bass in control.

Hope that helps, Trev. 8-)

Try the technique demonstrated at about 1:00 into the video:

Victor Wooten...

You can also google Russ Rodgers free online videos on slap bass...
