double thumbing help?

Sign in to disble this ad
ive been reading some stuff on double thumbing.

and ive watched victor wootens lesson on it, and have been practcing it.

ive been having some trouble comming up with my thumb

does anyone have any tips for this? i seem to mute the string with my palm alot.

i also rest my fingers(exept my index) on the bottom of the bridge pickup? is this a good idea? or should i leave my hand free?

i feel like i can pluck more with the rest of my fingers off the pickup but when i have them on my thumb is alot more stable.

any tips would be greatly appreciated

Question

I'm going to bring this post back because I also have this question. My problem is pretty similar, but in my case the thumb going up doesn't quite have the right sound; it's too muffled. Also, in what position should your hand be when you play with your thumb? I tend to have my fingers stretched out when I do, but I'm working on keep them more curled in for plucking after the thumbing (this is kinda starting to sound dirty )

Well, the first thing I'm going to say is that you are not going to get this overnight, over a week, or over a month. This is a fairly difficult skill. Just isolate the problem when you are coming up. Keep trying it until you get it. Watch the Vic videos very carefully. What I can say is: when coming up, make sure that the string goes across the upper part of your thumb joint and right on the side of your fingernail. Put your hand in a kind of "open palm" form with your fingers curled down but palm flat kind of like a monkey, just to get them out of the way for the breif moment you will be using your thumb. This is also to keep your fingers ready for the second part of dubthump. Work on some scales, take things that you play regularly and use the technique. Start incorporating your fingers once you are comfortable. This is the part that will take months to get decent at. They're are plenty of videos on youtube that show you most of what I show you, not just the vic ones. Do a search! Practice everything. Have fun...

YouTube it and you will find the most ridiculous amount of instructional videos. I'm sure you can find one (or ten) that can help you.

i used to have that same problem. it is probably because you aren't snapping the string when you come up with the thumb (as when you go down with it) but instead just brushing it

just work on getting a strong hit with the up stroke, will come with time

This is what I figured. In any case, I have a lot of other things to be working on before I start something like that. Today is only the 1st week-iversary of playing bass for me lol
