Double thumbing like Victor..

I'm going to get to work on learning how to double pluck with my thumb like Wooten shows on his video. Does anyone have any suggestions on this style, and how much thickening of my thumb's skin should I expect? thanks.

I had trouble with the technique at first. But I realized eventually that it's because I was thinking in a slap mentality while learning it. Try to just imagine that your thumb is a pick basically, it's the same idea.

You can expect a decent amount of blisters and possibly some blood on the top of your thumb. It should take about a week to get a callous going.

I haven't gotten nearly as good as Wooten at it, but I'm fairly proficient at double thumping. As far as pain goes, I got a callouse that stopped bleeding after a week, but new strings tend to dig in a bit. Every now and again I still get red-dot-thing underneath my thumbnail from the friction and erosion. Hurts A LOT, but using some nail polish or Krazy Glue is an easy remedy.

Just remember to relax the thumb joints. To be a little more precise I would say to keep the joint near the end of your thumb just slightly more ridged that the joint nearest the palm . My biggest issue was my tendency to turn my entire thumping hand into brick and hack away hence all the bloody thumbs in my past and those above. Once relaxed I started to get the sounds I wanted. Damn it's a cool sound though!

I've let my thumb nail grow a little, then cut it off straight across. Helps with the attack.

Reading this reminds me of Beatrix Kiddo under the stern tutelage of Pai Mei.

I've been trying to get this down nicely for some time. I found it a lot easier to play on some basses (especially my '74 precision) than others (nasty on all of my Ibanez basses). I guess a lot of it can also depend on the action and body structure. Or, maybe its just in my head.

There's a lot of stuff on YouTube in case you haven't checked there already. I'd search for "double thumb technique" or "double thumping" for starters. Might try wrapping a piece of medical tape (gauze tape), or similar around the contact area of your thumb. I don't think it would mess too much with your tone so much as allow you to practice the technique a little longer before rubbing your thumb raw, until those callouses are built up. Best of luck.
