Now i watched the Victor Wooten slap technique and started trying to learn the double thump today, im not doing too good so far but for those who can do the double thump how much time of practice did it take for you to get the nag of it?

After a couple of months it should start sounding good(assuming you practice everyday). It took me kind of a while to get used to using it naturally. It's been a couple of years now and I am definetly still practicing.

yeah this takes a lot of work. i didn't have a good grasp on exactly how the tech. should be executed tho for the first while. but i went from feeling utterly crappy at this, and then all the sudden one day i was doing it and it's a lot of fun. wank fests a plenty

It hurts the top of my thumb on the up stroke.

More practice I feel.

One thing that's interesting is all the variations that can be done with this technique. In his video, Victor demonstrates this by doing the thumb plucking from his elbow. However, it also works well and yields a different tone to do the down/up stroke from the wrist. Additionally, if playing fingerstyle lines I like to use the fleshy part of the middle of the thumb but for slap/pop sounds I like to use the corner of the thumb-tip.

yeah i started trying to doing all the motion in my wrist, but later found it's better to come from the elbow or shoulder, mix it up to keep from wearing out, you'll get much better control. so i find it's best not to do it all in the wrist

I was wondering, which part of the thumb do you hit the string with on the upstroke. I've been using the bump where the thumb joint is, but im not getting a very good sound. I guess maybe just more practise?

there's no right answer here. You should be able to do it in several positions. I find the thumb joint to be better for non-slap double thumping but the nail position better for slap/pop double thumping.

Actually not. It's very simple but requires serious devotion.

It took me 5 hours to get into the feel, about a month to do it decently.

...Still can't do a decent triple-slap though .

what i've just discovered

for a while i'd had a hard time getting the rhythm of it down which is one of the biggest things to mastering it, so instead of two thumps and one pluck, i've started experimenting with two thumps and two plucks, not only is it helping me get better with popping with my middle finger but it's helped A LOT in thinkin with triplets but without the triplet feel, i can't really explain but switching it up like that has helped me a lot. It's gonna be a while before i can do it all on the same string though!

I have been doing the double thump a while, but I am not sure if I am doing it right as I am wearing out my thumb nail on the upstroke. I know victor has his sensitivy turned way up so the slightest action receives maximum power.

ive been doing it for about six months and can do it pretty well now, i can do it all on the same string with both thumps and plucks, i just cant put individual notes to each attack yet. It definately takes a while.

that is exactly what i've been working on lately. I have just been doing scales and playing a note with each attack. What exercises are you doing?
