Double thump question. Yes, I searched already

Howdy folks! I've been reading up on double thump, and I think I'm going to make it my next bass-playing endeavor.

However, sinse I haven't had the chance to watch any of the videos yet, (school computer, blocks video sites) I don't really get what folks mean when they say you hit the string going down and then hit it again going up? Do you guys mean "down and up" as in "toward and away from the body of the bass", or more like "toward and away from the floor"?

I'm guessing its the latter, because from the threads I've read it seems like Larry Graham is one of the few if not the only guy who does the former, but I still think I need this cleared up.

Thankee!

I don't really use this technique, only tried it out a few times, but I think it's diagonally... you slap "through" the string and your thumb comes to rest on string below it. You're still twisting your forearm, just at a different angle, and following through instead of bouncing.

think of your thumb as a pick almost. i'd say this is one of the most difficult techniques to do well. Its very easy to mess up.

So if my thumb were a pick, I'd be moving it up and down towards the ground. Okeedokee!

But also, are you supposed to use the tip of the thumb or the bony joint area that you would normally slap with?

more of the tip, but the string kind of grazes the knuckle too(at least when i do it)

yeah when i first started i was using my knuckle but that begins to hurt pretty quickly then realized u use more of the pad of the thumb and come back up with the corner of your thumb nail.
