double thumping in "Sinister Minister" solo

Sign in to disble this ad
Any of you guys able to do the double-thump/pop section towards the end of Victor's solo in "Sinister Minister"? I've been working at it for a while, and I'm not sure if I'll ever get it up to speed.

So I'm asking this question because that section makes me wonder if Victor's the only person who can really do it the right way. I've seen people cover that song, but they always seem to skip that part of the solo and improvise something else.

So can any of you shredders out there nail that part, or what?

I'm not exactly sure which part you're talking about. Do you mean that part at 3:13? If you do, then that part goes something like this:

------------19---15-----------
0--15--19---------------------
-------------------------------
-------------------------------

------------17---14-----------
0--14--17---------------------
-------------------------------
-------------------------------

------------15---12-----------
0--12--15---------------------
-------------------------------
-------------------------------

-------------------------------
0--12--14---------------------
-------------------------------
-------------------------------

The first set of three notes I slap down and hammer on and the second two I pop and pull off. He also adds in some muted stuff and some other variations which you can probably figure out on your own. Sorry if thats not very clear or if that's not even the part you were talking about.

Thanks man, but the part I'm thinking of comes right before that part, from around 2:54 to 3:11. He's doing it so fast it's almost like tremolo picking.

There are no double thumping in that solo. I can play it. It's just thump open string, hammer, thump hammer, pluck, pull, and repeats. And a few open hammer plucks to bridge the above technique.
As of the part above, I can play it. I can play the whole goddamn song. I never recorded it, but there's a 15 second clip of me playing the bassline with lots of variations on youtube. I'll send you the link if you want, but it's not the part you are looking for

I have Victor's book (The Best of Victor Wooten), and he transcribed the song himself, and there is double thumping in the section I'm talking about, according to his transcription (page 85). The basic pattern is thumb down, thumb up, pop. He does that pattern over the song's chord progression, and it sounds awesome.

Anyway, I already know how to play the part, I just can't play it nearly as fast as Victor. I started this thread to see if anybody out there was able to play it the way Victor does up to speed.

I'd still really like to see your youtube clip, because you obviously learned this song the hard (and more admirable ) way, by transcribing it yourself, and would be cool to see how close you came to what Victor has in his book.

I learned the song the hardway? Nope. I got the transcription book too. Instead of double thump and single pluck, I always use single thump and double pluck, which is a lot easier. Just keep practicing, and you'll eventually get it fast enough. I used to practice that song 8 hours a day (during christmas break, for about 4 or 5 days)

But here's the 15 second clip (my camera only lets me take 15 seconds of video)

Nice job on the video man!
But I'd still like to hear from somebody who can play that section I'm talking about the way Victor does...
