Those are harmonics he is doing at the start right? How does he do that little riff and get so many harmonics? Can someone please explain?

Doug's playing more than one harmonic at a time simultaneously, producing chords. Most of the time, there are only two notes being played together in Doug's piece, so they'd be called dyads in some circles.

As an example, you can barre your pinky lightly over the D and G string frets, but not hard enough to force them down to the fret wire. Then, pluck the D and G strings together, using the index and middle fingers.

This piece is similar to the Jaco Pastorius tune "Portrait of Tracy", which is a standard showcase of harmonics on solo bass.

Anyone know exactly what he is doing at 0:40? It sounds like slapping muted notes, but he is doing it with his index finger or something????? Anyone know exactly what he is doing?

That's his own unique slapping technique! Tap-Slap is you will! Threw me off the first time I saw him do it!
