doug wimbish slapping

it sounds like slapping but definately doesn't look like it, what is he actaully doing? how could i learn? and what benefits does it have over standard slap and pop technique

He's tapping on the strings with his fingers to make it sound like slap. And then to do the really quick slapping, he sticks his thumb behind the string and alternates finger and thumb.

On another note, boy, that's a not-very-compelling tune he's playing. I guess some guys just work better in a band setting.
