Dual Melody Playing - You Can't Hold No Groove - Wooten

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been learning the Victor Wooten Song - You Can't Hold No Groove and so far I have been able to play pretty much all the song besides this one part of the song.

The part I'm talking about is Bridge. After the part with the basic melody and the fast muting on top begins the part where he starts to play 2 parts at once.

G---4444444444444444444445555777777777777777777
D----------------3--------------------------3----------
A----------5-----------5-------------5-----------5---
E-----3--------------------------3---------------------

For those of you that have the song if you skip to 1:45 into the song.

I'm hoping you guys can provide me with some insight as to how you would play this? I want to play this piece for my Music A Level and this part of the song is restricting it for me.

My best guess when trying to figure out how its done was to tap the melody on the E, A and D strings with my left hand (fretting - just to clarify i'm not a lefty ) and to double thump the G string with my right hand while fretting it with my left hand as its tapping the melody.

That was my best guess to how to do it. Though I find that when I do that I get the problem of nowhere near enough volume from tapping and too much volume from the other hand double thumping it. Then when I have to move up to the 7th fret on the G and retain my melody being tapped out with my left hand and the same time, I find it becomes a big stretch which I can't really do and then it furtherly lowers the volume.

So again is anyone able to provide me with some insight as to how I can play this properly?

I'm thinking you're doing it right, except you shouldn't worry much about fretting the notes on the G string. Just mute the string as you tap out the bassline, and play the right hand part on the G string.

i saw vic do a clinic and someone asked him about this. his right hand technique lends itslef to a certain muted rhythm and then he just adds notes to it.
