Search the Effects forum-lots of stuff on the E-Bow, including a current thread asking the same questions as yours. Here's a couple sound samples I posted in that thread as well:

Thumbs down

as far as technique is concerned, it's really really hard to get a consistent sound out of an e-bow, getting the height JUST right is essential, but of course the right height is influenced by how hard you press the note with your left hand, and where in relation to the pickup the ebow is. Avoiding the vibrating string hitting the ebow is difficult too. Don't even get me started on muting while string skipping.

It's not worth all the practice imo.

Never listened to much King Crimson to be honest.

I think an E-Bow is more than worth the effort it takes to learn it- it really is as close as an electric can get to bow playing. Not to mention it's a hell of a lot easier to learn than a bow on upright is...

Check out Michael Manring. He's been known to use E-Bow on occasion quite effectively. Bass Day 98
If you watch that you'll see a lot of other great bassists but Michael Manring shows up after not too long with his E-Bow in hand.

Actually I was talking about Robert Fripps solo work and his stuff with Eno. Your most recent e-bow sample has the heart breaking beauty that he creates. I deffinately need to get one.

Justin Chancellor of Tool uses one on the song Lost Keys. He doesn't use it in the very musical way that Brian and Manring d othough. He's providing feedback, and lots of it.

I'll second what Josh said above:

check out Michael Manring - he has been using E-Bows for years.

I saw him live 1 1/2 weeks ago (bass clinic followed by a concert) and he was using 2 at once on one composition, "Adhan".

Adam Jones or Justin Chancellor? I read an interview with AJ and he said he doesn't use one (contrary to Ebow's website.) He said that Robert Fripp showed him ways to get real feedback (gotta love gear snobs.)

RF is still the man.
