E String Buzzing

Sign in to disble this ad
A quick background...I'm new at learning bass. I'm using a 1-2-4 fingering on my fretting hand.

Here's the problem. Whenever I'm about to fret with my 4 finger or lift it off after playing a note, the string buzzes. This doesn't happen on any other string. (Once it's planted, the string stops buzzing.)

Any idea what might be causing this?

Yea . . . most basses do buzz . . . try turning down the treble or mids just a bit, and . . . work on your technique - as I learned to just brush back over the strings with the fingers of my right hand, my touch became much lighter - 75% of the buzz that I used to have, went away. With a light touch, most of us will have to turn our amps more though.

Of course, if you use a pick, your attack is probably pretty aggressive! The buzz will most likely stay around.

dont forget to make sure your fretting finger is bang behind the fret, if your in the middle somewhere you're gonna get buzz from that.

First of all, a properly set up bass doesn't buzz anywhere.

This is a technique issue.

Over time, you'll build up a bit of strength in that pinky and muscle memory will help you land exactly where you need to. Make sure that your fingers are arched properly. It's not a sin to move your hand either - just keep your technique straight.

I have small hands so sometimes I'll hit 1 & 2 with my index and middle, and then move my hand slightly down the board to grab the 4 with my pinky instead of doing a crazy stretch, especially at the nut end of the fretboard.

It gets better over time, I promise. Good luck!

Coming from 6 string acoustic buzz was a shock and just something I had to work through. Index to sound the note and middle to mute the string works for me. Do what ever works for you, it's just part of bass.

I alternate between middle and ring finger for the muting - depends on what string I'm on. Again find how it's best for you. Studybass.com has a section on this.
