E string resonating when playing slap

Sign in to disble this ad
I’ve recently started playing some slap stuff but I’ve found that when slapping on the A string my E string is resonating somewhat, I’m fairly sure I’m not making any contact with the E I think the resonation is caused by the force of the slap is this some sort of technique issue here?

Yeah, you have to mute the E string.

Try putting some foam or other soft material under the strings near the bridge.

Imo, before you begin doing random stuff to your bass, do what you need to do to eliminate the problem from the seed. Resonating E string when playing on the A string means the E string is not muted. Figure a way to mute it.

Either with the thumb-over-neck technique or barre-mute all strings with the index finger and use the other 3 fingers to fret, etc.

I use my right forearm to mute the E string a lot. Works well until it rips out my arm hair...

Yeah, but it won't work. For slapping, most people don't want a muted string sound. They want to hear the ring of the note, even if they stop it quickly. And besides, I'm a firm believer that you don't cure technique problems with equipment solutions.

Agree with above. Muting the "E" string is paramount. Taking some time and learning to mute it is the only way to control it. In the long run foam inder strings, or the hair ties at the nut are just a little band aid for poor technique.

The foam wil help mute you E string, but then when you try to slap it, it'll still sound deadened. Honestly, the best way it just practice muting.
