E on A String versus E on D string

Sign in to disble this ad
Not sure if I've got the correct forum but here goes...

I was practicing last night and noticed that the E (7th fret) on my A String seems muddy compared to the E (2nd fret) on my D string which sounds, for lack of a better term, brighter.

Is this normal? Can I do anything to "fix" the one on the A string as it is much more convenient to what I am playing.

This is on my Fender Jazz with an Audere and NJ4SE's.

Thanks for any info you can share.

Mike

Very likey is because the diameter of your A string is much greater then the D, coupled with the fact the string "length" when fretting the thicker string is shorter would change the harmonics. You could go to a thinner gauge A.

If I understand you correctly, I think it's impossible to fix, since the A string is a larger gauge than the D string (normally, at least!)

Besides, why do you want to change it? sometimes you might need to play that E with it not being so bright

Good points. I guess it just sounded funny/odd to me. It could be useful to have the same note available in two flavors.
Thanks.

Play closer to the bridge on the A string and not as close to the bridge on the D string to even things out.

As normal as normal can be!
I find it especially useful when slapping. As an octave to the open E when slapping, I always use the 2nd fret on the D string, for a brighter, sharper attack. When I want a smoother sound, I use the 7th fret on the A string. I think the difference is cool. Just like plucking the open A string in comparison to the A on the E string. I love bass!

Pair that with the suggested plucking at the neck or at the bridge, and you've got tons of sounds. You can even make a faux-flange sound by moving the plucking from neck to bridge, bridge to neck, etc.

Then also consider pluck attack... a lifetime of work awaits!

Bass is very dynamic.
