Easy grooves...just my imagination?

Sign in to disble this ad
This morning I was playing along with the Temptations song "Just My Imagination." The notes are very easy to find, but it takes alot of practice to REALLY make it groove. I found that it worked best to use a single finger on the right hand, Jamerson style.

But WOW what an awesome bassline! What is your favorite easy-to-play bassline that REALLY grooves?

The Animals - We gotta get out of this place.
and I ALWAYS liked 'Stop in the name of Love'

I agree 100% on your call on Jamerson.
I have found the same thing, using 'The Hook'
changes your attack, and part of his
distinctive style is the attack. It affects the
timing slighty, just a nuance, but if you want to
cover him well, use the one finger technique and
it comes together.

I also have always admired Jack Casady's
attack, especially on the JA live recordings.
It can be depressing to hear somebody who
was THAT GOOD.

One of my favourites...I recall listennig to that as a kid with my transistor radio playing as I went to sleep. Pretty tune & very neatly arranged.
From the same era, I will add "Evil Ways" & "Oye Como Va" as somewhat 'easy-to-play' lines that groove.

Darryl Jones mentioned in a BP interview practising the "I'll take you there" bassline repeatedly.

some others- "Express yourself"

"same old song" by the Four tops strikes me as a one-finger bassline- I read on a website that Jamerson played it.
an addictive line to play- all notes in the first position.

"All Blues" - miles davis....you can keep this song simple or go crazy with it, but it grooves with some good horn players

This one keeps popping up on the Oldies station.
It's King Floyd's "Groove Me".
Basically, it's a 2-bar figure during the verses-
1/8th note feel...
l1----&--l-&---&-&l
Bar 1
"A" played on "Beat 1"
"C#" played on the "& of Beat 3"

Bar 2
"E" played on the "& of Beat 1"
"F#" played on the "& of Beat 3"
"A"(octave) played on the "& of Beat 4"

Lotta space + a lotta upbeats.

I was thinking more on this this morning and these two
popped into my head.

Dancing in the Street - Martha Reeves and
the Vanseluses and there is a good version
with Mick Jagger and David Bowie as well.
in B

Harlem Shuffle [ Stones ] which was their cover
of 'Shake Your Tailfeather,Baby'

The version I learned was Am to Bb
A E G G E A => Bb

Both really funky tunes.
