Eliminating my "clank."

Hey TB,

I haven't noticed how clanky my playing was (I thought I could only hear it from the bass, not the amp) until I picked up my sexy little RC-2 to do some loops. I have found myself replaying things over and over again because I have this clank sound on every single note. It seems as if the skin on my plucking finger tips is so rough now, it makes a sound a lot like a pick. I have had to slow my playing down and use the big fatty part of my finger instead of the tips, like I usually do. I also use light gauge strings with a decently low action (if I play to hard, my strings often get close enough to the pickups to make a nasty pop sound).

Would raising my action or changing back to heavy string fix this, or do I have to work on my technique??

I used to have a similar problem, I use pretty standard gauges and have a low action.

I tried everything (actions, gauges, amp settings) but changing my style of playing and it didn't feel comfortable. In the end I conceded and changed my technique to use more of the pads of my fingers than the tips. I've found now that I can't play any other way.

It's probably best to try all the options - sorry that's probably not the answer you were looking for.
