Entwistle Technique

Entwistle developed what he called a "typewriter" approach to playing the bass. This involves positioning the right hand over the strings so all four fingers could be used to tap percussively on the strings, causing them to strike the fretboard with a distinctive twangy sound. This allows the player to play three or four strings at once, or to use several fingers on a single string. This allowed him to create passages that were at once very percussive and melodic. He used this approach to mimic the fills used by his drummers in band situations, sometimes sending the fills back at the drummers faster than the drummers themselves could play them. This method is unique and should not be confused with the hammer-on tapping techniques of Eddie Van Halen and Stu Hamm or the slapping technique of Larry Graham, and in fact pre-dates these other techniques. A demonstration of this approach to bass playing can be seen on a video called John Entwistle - Master Class, part of Arlen Roth's Hot Licks instructional series.
Somebody please explain this more in depth to me. What exactly does he do?

There is a good video of him doing it here
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...75&q=entwistle

what he does is he hits the strings with a very short, hard attack, but doesn't press down hard enough for the notes he is "tapping" to come out distinctively.

hope that helps, at least a little.

That reminded me alot of what Ryan Martinie does, but ryan does it like that becuase he's strings are tuned so low that he gets a thump sound from that sort of "tapping".

Ohh! Is that the DVD that has a part where they isolate just Ox's track alone?

Someone was telling me about this recently - I want to see that!

No, I think that's "The Kids are Alright" DVD. There's a Bonus feature where on... Won't Get Fooled Again, I think, there's some isolation footage of just him.

But, now that you mention it, I seem to recall hearing about a DVD where there are some iso tracks of just him. Anyone?

Keep in mind Johns strings are like ON the fretboard when he's playing like that. So if you have the strings raised up a bit it will take alot more precision to hit them with the right amount of force so they will tap the frets without you tapping them hard enough play the note at where you tapped them. Not to mention there is no way you can you can play that fast like that without lowering your strings..

Oh yea and whats with them cutting off Ent's solo in that vid! What a rip off!

Likewise, I knew he was a monster but I wasn't aware that he was a genuine bassist.
