ERB thumb placement

For you ERBs (Extended Range Bassists) out there, where do you rest your thumb when playing. When I play my 4-string I just sit my thumb on the pickup and don't move it, sometimes I also set my thumb on the E string when I'm playing a lot of high notes. When I go on my 5-string, trying to play my G string with my thumb on the pickup or B my fingers can't go as fast. Is this just because I haven't been playing a 5-string bass as long and my technique isn't fully developed, or should I move my finger up onto the E string? My hands are quite large and have no problem reaching the string and I can adjust the volume and tone with my thumb on my pickup.
