But (talk about embarassing) a tune that gave me trouble many years ago when I was working in a cruise ship show band was John Denver's "Thank God I'm A Country Boy". Something about the occasional odd phrase lengths in this thing that on the surface is just a clichèd two-beat C&W feel -- plus the fact that it's notated in 2/2, which means you're scanning about 8 bars every 2.5 seconds -- turned into a giant brainfart for me every time we played it. |

Sometimes I spill beer on myself while I'm playing and I miss a note or a change. Damn country 5ths. But I always remember what my jazz teacher told me; "If you hit a wrong note, play it again next time around and everyone will think the guitarist messed up".
But the song that always comes to mind when asked about "the one" is Cult of Personality by Living Colour. That song has kicked my a$$ for 10 years. Still can't play it right. Something about the fingering trips me up.

Except on "The Trees," I have trouble scaling up the fretboard at the end of the 2nd verse. I know where I'm supposed to be, but I can't seem to get the timing just right.
I used to have a really hard time with "Leave That Thing Alone" too. |

Havn't practiced it for quite some time, but unless I tap my foot in double time and focus very hard on counting, I can't get those syncopation right.
Same for Sabbath's War Pigs - counting the hihat, never feels natural. |

I think I had problems because I started it by reading it. Took forever to get it engraved in the brain.
I think of easy being 3 chord jams. So this one might have been a little harder than normal.

I nail it when I'm not paying attention, and when playing with the cd, but if people are sitting in, they watch me for the change and I f--- it up every single damn time. It's totally ridiculous and embarrassing. And I really don't know why it is. |
