I cracked my right wrist in a fall and was wearing a cast.
I couldn't hold my arm in the normal playing position (I play with a pick mostly). I had to lower the back of the bass a bit and rotate my arm so I was playing with my arm kinda pointing at the floor.
Made it through a few practices before the cast came off. Don't think I played a gig with it, though.
How about you?

Drummer, hurt his wrist (the kick one) racing down a stair in a high building same day the gig was (we went to Stockholm a cpl of days before to settle things) ..
Ended up with him at the hospital half an hour before the actual performance, getting a shot, and then after the gig STRONG pills and sleep...
We got no deal anyway, but gig went good and we had greatz fun!

It was on my plucking hand, I don't use it either but it did limit my playing somewhat. |

When I got home I didn't move for 3 days. On Sunday I was on plenty of pain pills and feeling pretty good so I went to church. They didn't have a bassist so I went up there and played in a chair, staples and all. After I was done with an hours worth of music I took my bass off and set it down and began walking to my seat. The lady in the front row pointed out to me that my incision had started bleeding. I looked down and saw that the whole front of my shirt was drenched in blood. That pain medication really worked, seeing that I didn't even notice that.
Also, I've had some torn cartilage and a torn tendon in my right wrist from a work accident. I wear a cast until I get surgery for it but I usually take it off to play the bass for church and in the studio.

| | | | Cut the middle finger on my fretting hand. Not so much fun, but I made it through, minus the use of that finger...

| | | | The show must go on.... On one occasion, I played a show in Bakersfield with a freshly broken little toe which I duct taped to the other toes and just wore a sock on that foot.
On another occasion, I played a show in Detroit very sick with a very high temperature. Not a pleasant memory.

| | | | Buddy came and rescued me two weeks after surgery and a week after I got out of the hospital and drove me to a jazz jam session, since they didnt have another bass player. Took an electric, not an upright. I was pretty gone on vicodin to kill the pain and I remember my Fender jazz seemed to weigh a ton, so I asked him to carry it. I went in pajamas bottoms and slippers, because of incisions.
Sat down and played two hours. I definitely had trouble with the uptempo numbers like "Night in Tunisia" . We did a lot of ballads and I hot a lot of "experimental notes". I remember having trouble keeping from sliding out of the chair. I do not do drugs and I weaned off the vicodin after a month.
My wife was pissed as she was gone when I left the house. She thought I had wandered off and was going to call the cops.

| | | | I broke the first finger (pointer) on my right hand. The bone broke completely in two and my finger was bent at a 90 degree angle over my other fingers. They set it in surgery and put two stainless pins in it. My entire hand except my thumb was bandaged. The next night I played a job using a thumb pick.

Five stitches and a big bandage. Played that night.Couldn't use my little finger but managed to get through the gig. This past March, I severed the top of my left index finger right at the first knuckle. I'm right handed. Missed the gig that night but played keyboards with my band two days later. A week later I went back to bass using my middle finger, ring finger and pinky. It's getting better but I sure do miss that inch of finger!

I went to the ER, they gave me antibiotics and codeine. 3rd degree burns in some places along the pinky side of my hand. Still hurting, I drank a couple more beers and took the CoTylenol. I slept on the way to the 4 and half hour gig. It hurt some, but I think it healed quickly because I used it alot. I played another gig the next night. A few days later I went for a check up. It had healed well. I recommend playing soon after being burned, but cutting back on the beer with CoTylenol. I think I played a bit sloppy that night, but I don't remember that well.... |
