the second guy was certainly a bit better.
i don't really understand the whole youtube thing, though of videotaping yourself playing along to famous cuts... so maybe i am a bit biased.
that bassline IS killing, however.

| | | Heh...I know nothing about the first guy (other than he's been playing since 11 years old )...but the second one, MarloweDK is pretty damn good.
Edit: Not that the first is bad.
You should check out the rest of Marlowe's 200+ videos. Not only vids of him just playing well, but he has several intructional/demontrative ones up too. His videos always inspire me to learn songs that I hadn't considered before.

EDIT: oops, they're both Do I Do. I was referring to the first one. |

| A/Because the bass player never gets a closeup on DVD.
B/Because the tutorials don't show it either. |

| | | | first guy is very pedestrian, but A for effort
Marlowe is a funk specialist with nice feel and technique |

Sure it's technically impressive, but they certainly don't look like they "feel" the song or anything like that.
Personally I'd rather see variations on lines like that with unique flair and character added by the bassist. Not a note-for-note cover.
edit: that's all for the 1st one... the 2nd one certainly does have a better feel for the song.

While it's cool that they show how it's done, I've found that the better and more useful youtube videos are the ones where the guy will teach and explain what he played, either on the video or through some sort of web accompaniment, using youtube just to host the video.
Don't let this stuff sway you into not practicing. Some people are just better than others and need to practice less, but everyone has to practice at some point. Also, I've seen some pretty awful players put their videos up on youtube for no good reason at all. |

Is that really considered a tough tune these days? I mean I used to watch video of Wooten going nuts and get that "ugly" feeling. The vast majority of bassists could never play like that (assuming they wanted to). Stevie Wonder bass lines like that are an attainable goal if you practice.

But what I couldn't help noticing is how they both use four fingers across three frets on the lower frets and the first goes four-to-four on the upper frets while the other seems to stick with four-to-three.
I strive to use four-to-four pretty much everywhere except at the very bottom while telling myself that mastering this will make be better in the long run. But everytime I see what appear to be good bassists using four-to-three, I always start second guessing my approach. What's your philosophy on this? |

As a side note, After 6 months "playing" I still suck but I have a lot of fun with my bass :-)
Seriously, man, don't compare you against other guys but against yourself. Record your self and you'll see you improving over time ;-) | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
