Exercises for playing Metal?

Sign in to disble this ad
So heres the deal... ive been playing for about 15 years and have just gotten into a new band. The style is pretty much along the lines of All That Remains/Killswitch/Pantera.
I previously played a lot of funk and nu-metal so although Im quick enough the constant plucking is killing my right hand.
After a couple songs I get sort of a pain in the top of my right hand.
I admit that I dig in a little too deep but im wondering what else I can do to get myself in shape.
I play with either 2 or 3 fingers depending on the part.
Currently playing a 5 string Stingray HH tuned ACGCF with 45-130 guage DR Lo-Riders.

Practice playing "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Caught Somewhere in Time" by Maiden. If you can play them, you can play any metal song with fingers!

In the top of the Technique subforum is a thread called "Exercise Sticky". The #4 post will start you out. I can't imagine not benefiting from many of the posts in the thread, even with your experience as a bass player.

You could try one of those grip workout things. I've got the one that has an individual pad and spring for each finger, and it's worked great in improving the strength of my hand, especially the ring and pinky of my fretting hand.
