exercises for volume consistency

Any exercises you know for building consistency in the right hand?

I have a student whose velocity/volume fluctuates quite a bit. So far, we've suggested playing 8th notes with a click and headphones, while staring at the right hand and focusing on consistent volume. (We're working on both fingerstyle and pick.)

Any specific exercises that have worked for you?

I've also thought about finding a cheap VU Meter (hardware or software) for visual feedback - so it's easier to "see" the volume level. Thoughts?

I wouldn't even play 8th notes - I'd start at a much smaller interval, say quarters, or even half/whole notes at first. This isolates the attack more and hopefully will hone them in on what needs to be done physically to play with consistency. Other than that, consistency in the right hand just needs solid, hard, practice. No short cuts. I'd say your idea with the VU meter is good, too, as an added practice tool.

Yes- slowing it down sounds like a good idea. I feel that this type of exercise requires a lot of focus. If you're not paying attention to the volume, you allow yourself to play inconsistently.
