The only picks I use are Dunlop Ultex or felt. And I only use the Ultex for when I really trying to dig in. I absolutely love felts, despite what appears to be a fairly general consensus the other way. BUT to stiffen them up, I rub linseed oil on mine, sit them outside to dry in the sun, then wash off the excess with warm water and soap. Much stiffer so it's not like waving a piece of cloth in my hand, but not so stiff it's like a pick. I get a pretty decent tone out of them, myself. For reference, I play a fretless with tapewounds in indie rock and doom metal.

Felt picks are the only way to nail than McCartney sound. I played in a Beatles tribute band for a while and as annoying as they were to get used to, I'll be damned if that wasn't the sound.

In all fairness, I think there was a lot more to his sound than just a felt pick (which I'm pretty sure he didn't use, but I could be wrong) haha

Ever since I joined the Tom Petty tribute band I've never used a pick so much in my life, and my choice has been the Dunlop Big Stubby 2.0mm pick. Made of lexan, it's the least clacky pick I've been able to find. As per a tip I got from Jimmy M last year, I just turn down the tone a bit, and it's almost completely noiseless.
