Fernando saunders' tapping technique

What I would like to know is if any one knows how this technique is executed?
I don't know quite how to describe it but on the Lou Reed live at Montreux 2000 DVD (And live when i saw him in Sydney and probably on other recordings) Fernando Saunders plays by fretting with his left hand and then "tapping" the strings over the end of the fretboard with his right hand. He is not double tapping, he is fretting notes and then playing the same string with his right hand. The sound this produces is quite percussive and very cool, but i can't seem to get the same sound off my bass, I have only seen Fernando do this on a fretless bass and I'm playing on a fretted so maybe it can only been done on a fretless? any way, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ryan Martinie also do it(he usually did it in octave, by slap one and tap another string)

i kinda get it sometimes, sometimes the sound is not really good lol

i want to know how to get a good percussive sound too, because i always got a church bell-ish/gong sound (any certain EQ?)

I believe Louis Johnson does this as well.
It's a lot like slap, except instead of using your thumb, you are using your fingertip to hit the string fast to make a sound. Make sure you do it off the fretboard though, or else you'll be doing tap harmonics!

Doug Wimbish uses that technique as well, slapping with the fingertips rather than thumb.
