Fieldy from KoRn and Double Slapping.

Pulled from wikipedia.org
"His playing style consists of slapping, double slapping, double-popping, standard finger-style plucking, and palm muting; his standard tuning is: A, D, G, C, F."

How would you double slap and double pop? I know how to slap with my thumb just once. And I watch him sometimes playing live. And it looks like he slaps with his pinky. Is that how you play double slap or what?

I'm not too sure if the Korn bassist's technique is different from that ... it is possible, at least.

im not sure if the victor double slap is what he means, by double slapping i think it means slapping 2 strings at once, like double popping

Whoa.

Good call. That's why I posted my reply explaining that I was not sure about this ... I don't really know Korn. I have heard somewhere that the Korn bass player does hit notes on the upstroke though ....

as far as I know, fieldy uses his thumb AND an extended pinky to slap, and keeps his hand in the shape of a 'Y' while doing it. I don't think he goes off the lowest or second lowest string with it, but basically he puts his hand in that position and twists his wrist.

As much as I refuse to hop on the Fieldy-bashing wagon as so many others have here on TB, do you all realize we're putting Fieldy and Victor Wooten in the same thread regarding their technique????

Like I said, I don't really know Fieldy, or Korn... I just saw a question and tried to point to something that might be helpful. Even if I hated Korn my response would have been identical, there is no sense bashing a band on an internet forum.

As for that pinky technique, that sounds cool. I can't imagine how you get the pinky notes to sound as loud as the thumb though.

Thumbs up

it looks like he uses his ring finger to slap. Requires some developed quick-twisting' muscles in your arm. He uses a really agressive twisting of the fore-arm to get the required velocity of his finger to slap, and alternates it with the thumb to slap pretty quickly and really cut through the mix, but it can sound quite sloppy

Fieldy's sound

1. He's a rockstar doing what he love for a living. I doubt few of the people bashing him can say the same.

2. His particular use of the bass is a big part of the bands sound and success.

While korn is not one of my favorite bands, to act like he can't play or sucks because you don't like his slap technique and or sound is pretty silly. What he does is perfectly acceptable in the context of the music they play. In fact their music would be very lacking without it.

Do we really need another session of Fieldy bashing from the self proclaimed righteous playing brigade ?

i bet fieldy can play better than most of those people who decide to 'insult' him over THE internet to get an ego boost, or because they think fieldy jokes are actually still funny even though its been done to death

You might find some stuff about slap bass over at this thread:
The Slap Bass Welcome Center.

Many of the early posts are links to slap lessons.

Oh yes another Fieldy related pointless thread.Man I love those, having no point and stuff.

People, you want double thumb and pop stuff, there are masters like Wooten and Miller, listen to them, not fieldy.

Are you angry at your parents or worldwhatever, there is always Korn with earpiercing distortion and twingy bass.

Different stuff for different people. No need to fight.
