Not a really significant question, but one that struck me recently.

Just curious.

I really don't think about it too much, but I must lead with my Index... that's the bigger callous.

when fingerstyling always start with the finger most to the right. if i'm using 2 fingers, i use my middle, if i use 3 (for fast triplets) i start with my 4th and for very fast quavers i start with my pinky

Occasionally I think about it, and a honestly can't tell any more - at least most of the time. Practise plays stuff leading on each finger so you CAN lead with either - sometimes you'll come off a tricky bar and end up on the oposite finger you started with, and need to be able to just keep going without even noticing. Of course some stufff IS significantly easier (octaves are easer with the middle finger), so I'll play them a specific way, but that might dictate that the bar before or bar after is played in a different "direction'.

For three finger stuff (which i use rarely, and not as competently) i lead with the ring finger, but thats more about the DIRECTION. If you're playing in 4, with three fingers you end up leading off each group with a different finger anyway - all the more reason you need to be able to lead with any finger.

It probably depends on the song, and how I've learned and have gotten used to playing it.

Usually my middle. If I am playing one or two notes at a time, it will be my middle. I probably do this to get a slightly more aggressive attack.

However, for most fast types of rhythms I use three fingers and start with my ring.

Sometimes I play triplets and 16th notes with my thumb slapping the first note.

I am the tie breaker...

For warm up exercises however, I just go up chromatically from string to string and back down, i go up that way one octave, then i switch off and lead with a different finger, I do this for 10 minutes or so, and then im warmed up.

wow this poll is dead even.

I use my middle finger to lead of in a situation where it doesn't matter, and I am just doing it out of reflex.

He means what finger you pluck with first when you start playing.
For me it varies actually.

Depends on the beat. If I'm starting a phrase on a back beat, then I'll use the middle finger so that my index is used on the down beat. But since I almost always alternate, the index could end up on the back beat by the end of the bar... at which point my fingers either swap parts, or look for a rest to catch up.

I've been practicing using all four of my plucking fingers, so it definitely varies. Sometimes I only use my main two (usually starting on the middle), sometimes I use three or four, and sometimes I only use one.

When I use one, it's my middle, and when I use two, I usually lead off with my middle, so that's what I voted for in the poll.

So I went down and tried a couple of simple root/fifth patterns and .... it depends on the pattern

If I am descending I start with the middle, if I am ascending I start with the index.
