Enough to get the job done. Different length on middle from index for different tone. I keep an emory bd with me. Eat good food too.

As short as they can possibly be. I find that they get in the way, and I never actually use them to alter my tone- if I'm looking for more articulation than I can get with just my fingers, I'll go for a pick.

I too.

Nails get it the way, produce unwanted tone(s)

I'm not seeing a poll.

I keep my picking nails short enough to I can use them or not. I curl or "claw" my fingers like a guitarist for fingernail stuff.

I play fingerstyle jazz guitar, and get acrylic overlays (no fake nails, just the resin to strengthen my own) for that style of playing. I keep them long enough so that they just peek out past my fingers.

I don't particularly like them for bass playing, but am getting used to them. I prefer no nails for bass.

As short as possible without them bleeding when I play.

I can't stand the noise they make when I'm playing like 16th notes and you hear finger nail noise on some notes.

+1 for "So short, I can't grab a quarter off linoleum floor."

If I want all that click-click nonsense, all I have to do is look underneath the fridge and I'll find something left over from my guitard days.

Long enough to provide good scratch

On my right hand, long enough to give a good body scratchin !
I will also use hardener to keep them from cracking.
