In fact, you should be able to play most of your repertoire without it. Hammer ons from open strings are the only potential problem, since the neck will move around if you aren't touching it at all.
Really? I use my thumb to keep the neck in place, I have double-jointed thumbs so I just make like a little stand and hold it there, works well for me.

I would say go through all your begining stuff again and try to do it right, I always do that for any new technique and anythign at all really. Works pretty well for me.

I only play one per fret when I am doing something elaborate which, in a band/gig setting, is rare. There it is usually the famous bunch-of-bananas technique.

There isn't anything wrong with not being able to employ the one finger per fret technique at the lower end of the neck. It can be a bit complicated at first, but just work at it, stretch your fingers, and take it slow. You will develop a feel for it, and fretting will become easier.

Also, there is nothing wrong with employing the Simandl technique, which is using 1-2-4, and some of the other users on here have already mentioned it.

It is just something that takes time to adjust to, but never, ever, continue to do it if it hurts because that will just lead to major problems down the road if you continue to stress your hand in such a way that it causes you pain.
