finger picking technique question

Sign in to disble this ad
Whenever I finger pick, I always rest my thumb on the top of the neck pickup. However, what I am worried about is that every time I go up a string, my picking fingers move closer to the bridge pickup of the bass. Is this something that will prohibit my playing in any way, or is is not worth worrying over? Thanks.

Do you keep your thumb on the pickup regardless of what string you're playing? If that's the case I'd suggest the floating thumb technique.

Some people like to keep their thumb on the pickup and/or the lower string, others prefer the floating thumb. Choose one and practice the hell out of it, because both work.

Now, considering u've chosen the 1st, it's natural due to the angle of your fingers, and i don't think it will limit your playing.

It won't prohibit your playing as much as providing an audible difference in tone.

The floating thumb or movable anchor techniques should help. Alternatively, you could adjust your thumb position relative to your plucking fingers.
