Finger pluck gets a little fret noise

When I finger the strings I've gotten into a bad habit of pressing the string down toward the body of the bass and pluckin it. When I get going fast I am tapping the other frets with the string. Is this normal? Technique real bad? or do i need to raise the action a little?

I'm having the same problem with a newly-acquired Fender Deluxe Jazz that was just professionally set-up. I've already raised the saddles a tad on the E, A, and D strings, but I still get that aggravating "click" sound except when I play softly. Funny, no problems with my other two basses.

It doesn't appear that I'm hitting the pickups.

What gives?

Find the place where your touch coincides with yer action and call it done. This can be done just with the instrument or a combination of you modifying yer touch and the set-up. When I first had my luthier set up a bass, he asked as to what strings, tuning and how low I wanted the action. I went with "as low as you can". Turned out too low for my normal touch, so, up it came. No biggie. It's something completely individual to the person and the instrument. Ever seen Geezer Butler's right hand technique?
