Finger techniques

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been playing electric bass a decent amount of time, I've gotten the basics of most styles between slap, different finger techniques, double thumb etc. and i was wondering what advantages and disadvantages are there in using three fingers with the right hand or two fingers with the right hand. THere may not be a definite better, but what calls for the use of one as opposed to the other... which in your opinion do you liek better and why? I'm sure its great to master both but i'm wondering which i should focus in on more. I do tend to see more wiht the two finger technique, it seems more popular but i dont see why three fingers wouldnt be better. ALso im new to this forum, are there any good posts you can leave the link to on different practicing strategies for any tehcniques and any playing in general. THanks in advance

I use three fingers for better muting and easier string crossings. If you posts about it, enter "three finger" in the "search this forum" at the right corner of the technique forum.

Depends on what type of rhythms and articulation your music calls for.

If you have to play really fast 3 note patterns or "machine gun" rhythms, there is a clear advantage in 3 fingers.

Try playing some Fear Factory with two and you'll see what I'm talking about.

It dependes from person to person, some people work incredbly well with 2 fingers like Steve Harris. The only guy i've seen that could do all right hand techniques extremly well was John Entwistle. I bet he had springs and coils inside his hand bones.
