Fingering Help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I'm practicing the White Stripes 7 nation army bass line as I thought it would be a good exercise to get my pinky working.

I'm unsure if my fingering is right, I'd really appreciate if someone could tell me if i'm doing it right. I've marked fingers below the tab below.

Thanks

re

as long as your playing the right notes, your fingering is right... whatever fingering your most comfortable with is the correct one.

Hey, if you can ever have a choice to use your pinky, do it. That way if you ever have to, it will be in shape to do so.

It's like doing jumping jacks before you go to a store that has a product that you want on a high shelf.

Practice is good.

Try that if you want to work your pinky. I hope I re-tabbed that properly...

Play some Iron Maiden. That'll get your pinky strength up.
If they're too hard for you then practice scales. If you have a bass teacher then he has probably tabbed out a scale sheet in all twelve positions if not I'll try and tab it out later.
When I started working on my scales my playing sky rocketed.
(When you can play the Iron Maiden songs, play them again... twice as fast.)

hey ozzyman, i'd like to take you up on that! - i dont have a teacher...

i play my scales, well, major/minor and pentatonics and that does help.

i dont get what you mean about the "12 positions" thing? I thought its just the same pattern moved up and down etc?

mind you i've only been playing 3 days....

thanks for the help

There's a whole set of patterns which can be moved up and down. Same notes, different fingerings.

Err... well I must have been really tired. There's only 7 positions to play each scale.
There are 8 notes in a scale right (but one is repeated)? They go WWHWWWH; W = wholestep (2frets) H= Halfstep (1fret)
If you start the scale in the second position the it would be WHWWWHW.
If you learn all those positions your pretty much set for any song.

C Major Scale in all pos.

C (1st pos.)
|-----------------------
|----------------7-9-10
|-------7-8-10---------
|-8-10-----------------

D (2nd pos.)
|----------------------------
|-------------------9-10-12
|------------10-12----------
|-10-12-13-----------------

ETC...

Major ************* W W H W W W H

Dorian **************** W H W W W H W

Phrygian ***************** H W W W H W W

Lydian ************************ W W W H W W H

Mixolydian ************************ W W H W W H W

Minor ************************************ W H W W H W W

Locrian ************************************** H W W H W W W

Major** ****************************************** W W H W W W H

There's a pattern to it. You can start these scales on any note on the fretboard.
Major = 1st pos
Dorian = 2nd pos
Phrygian = 3rd pos
Lydian = 4th pos
Mixolydian = 5th pos
Minor = 6th pos
Locrian = 7th pos
Major = 8th pos (or 1st)
