Question Fingering Question??

Sign in to disble this ad
What is the best way to finger a 1-5-1 octave??

For example, On a 5 string: Low C(1/1) - G(2/3) - C(3/3)...

When I play it, it sounds right but it feels wrong. I use
1st finger-3rd finger-3rd finger.

What is the correct fingering?
Thanks

That's fine if the notes speak clearly. On bass, I'd usually finger something that low on the fretboard using 1st finger 3rd finger 4th finger, both to make sure each note speaks clearly and to be able to play other notes quickly and cleanly.

Thanks! So, a straight C to C octave would be fingered with the 1st and 4th fingers? Not 1st and 3rd fingers?

You could finger it 1-3-4 like Lyle, or barre with your pinky: 1-4-4. I'd probably do the latter, since I play fretless and it's hard to get two fingers so close together. I probably wouldn't go 1-3-3, barring with my ring finger, since that's a bit of a stretch so low down.

EDIT: Oh, wait, you meant just the root and octave, without the fifth? If 1-3 is comfortable for you, I'd use that, but 1-4 can also be handy if you need 3 soon.
