Fingering question

Sign in to disble this ad
hi guys
been trying to learn some funk basslines but i think ive either got a bad bass that has a stupidly wide neck... or my hands are too small (theyre not..) or its my bad fingering technique and i keep falling over myself on the fretboard...

in what way would you guys play something like this.. what fingers would you use? they are all 16th notes at 114bpm

--------------|----
----------5h7|------
-------7---- -|------
-----x------- |5-----

what fingers do you use when doing hammer ons? say 3-h-5? i do it with with my index fingeer (first finger) and my pinky sometimes.. and sometimes my index and ring finger. i seem to have difficulty getting my index finger back up to the E string intime for the next note when i use it for a hammer on...

PLEASE someone enlighten me to a way to get my fingering together. a point in a website would be good just anything. many thanks in advance.

by the way... signed up for this forum years ago but never really posted..getting back into bass recently and i have to say i wish i had stayed on here. a great bunch of people. lovely community. i hope to be involved here for a long time.

I seem to be able to do it fine at that speed but I have been playing for almost a year and a half. Don't use your pinky for hammer ons, use your ring finger, you rarely use anything else really for a one step hammer on.

Alternatively you could use your middle finger and pinky to play the hammer on, and your pinky to play the 7 on 2nd string, which leaves your index finger to stay on the 5, or near the 5.

This requires a good amount of strength in those two fingers though, but if you're hammering on normally with your pinky you should be okay. If its a bit strenuous try doing octaves from index to pinky, or octave chords for double stopping / popping.

GL.
