First and Third Technique?

Sign in to disble this ad
I noticed that some bassists use a technique where the root and third of the chord are plucked very quickly. When I attempt it however, I bar both notes with one finger and I end up not being able to mute the notes and they ring together and get all muddied. It is especially hard when attempting to play very fast. This can be heard from Eric Wilson in many Sublime songs. Any ideas on how to mute with this technique?

i assume you play with a plec because when u play fingerstyle like eric, your finger will roll off one string and mute the one above it

you get better control with fingerstyle

also you cant drop them :P

Are you talking about a hammer-on? That's common for a fast root-3 pair. If so, when the root is an open string, it's no sweat - just pluck once, hammer the second note.

You mean the first and fourth, like A at the 5th fret on the E string and D at the fifth fret on the A string?

I can't imagine barring the first and the third.

I'd love to help you, but I'm not sure what you are talking about, sorry.

I think he means root (i.e. A, 5th fret of E string) and minor third (i.e. C, 5th fret of the G string) like that, and he's trying to strum all the strings but keep the A and D strings mutes (kinda like John Frusciante does, or better example...Pete Wentz)

Ahhh so a 10th?

I just pluck the root with my index and the 10th with my middle. Or the root with my thumb and the 10th with my middle.
