ok, so here's another techinique one.
in the red hot chili peppers song "suck my kiss", flea's bass pretty much runs the show.
is he using slap, funk fingers, on is he just leaving his tone high up? |

I'm not sure what you mean by leaving the tone "high up" but I'm fairly certain he's using a Musicman Stingray, and they've got a lot of bite to their tone.

That track (and almost all of Blood Sugar Sex Magik) was played on a Wal. |
