ok, so here's another techinique one.

in the red hot chili peppers song "suck my kiss", flea's bass pretty much runs the show.

is he using slap, funk fingers, on is he just leaving his tone high up?

In the offical notation book for Blood Sugar Sex Majick he plays fingerstyle (from memory, it's been 10 years since I had it...)

I'm not sure what you mean by leaving the tone "high up" but I'm fairly certain he's using a Musicman Stingray, and they've got a lot of bite to their tone.

He's just really attacking the strings really hard. That technique produces a"kind of"slapbass-like tone", w/some grittiness to it.When I'm going for that tone,I'll pump up the compression a little too. That way,you can really dig in.

I play my 'ray like that normally anyway, so I didn't even think to mention it

It's fingerstyle. Flea has his action low and plucks pretty hard, generally over the bridge pickup.

That track (and almost all of Blood Sugar Sex Magik) was played on a Wal.

Well there we go. Wal basses are reputed (or so I've read) to have amazing bite and growl. Playing hard on one of those would give a great tone. I wish I could play or even own one.

I hear its fingers, but...that would seem a lot harder to play, infact the bass line is perfect for slap and pop style.

It is fingerstyle. You can see it in the clip, read it in the official transcription, hear it in the song...

I thought he used a Wal on that album?
