Question Flea's Picking Technique?

Sign in to disble this ad
Its not often the mans asked about regarding his picking technique, but I'm wondering if anyone has identified his picking technique and possibly what size picks he uses? From the live clips I've observed, he appears to use a reasonable amount of arm movement. Thanks.

I'm about to 'pick' up on his picked songs like Parallel Universe, Don't Forget Me, Venice Queen etc so I would love to know.

Here are some clip links:

Parallel Universe @ Slane, http://youtube.com/watch?v=w1AZ12XUOe0

Parallel Universe @ Sao Paulo, http://youtube.com/watch?v=xfOo3zzTN5U

Don't Forget Me @ Slane, http://youtube.com/watch?v=fDAiYlZDZKU

Zephyr Song @ Slane, http://youtube.com/watch?v=r-RNUYzsOfY

Thanks

Looks to me like a low-slung version of Carol Kaye's technique, picking by the neck, using a side to side wrist motion (not the arm), and not moving the thumb. I would also guess he's using a heavy pick. Go to carolkaye.com and read about it in her playing tips section. It can be a real lifesaver because if I don't use her style, my hand hurts really bad.

yep heavy pick up by the neck practically on the neck! more obvious on songs like snow watch that video and you can see it he changes a bit for dn't forget me ( ie he uses his arm more ) i use his tech it just seems so much easier! for chords that is? he uses norm position just past bridge for single string playing
