i play with a pick, with my fingers (learning to use all of them at once in addition to just the "walking" pattern) and i slap. sometimes i use all 3 in one song.
it all depends on the sound you want. i play so much variety that it really only kills the field i have to play in by limiting myself to one specific way of playing. i think that sounds ok.
in other words, i have lots of options of how i want each song to sound by being able to play with a pick with fingers, or with slap. by disallowing myself one or two of those forms, then i'm left with fewer ways to express myself through bass.
something like that.

You should try playing with your fingernails, gives you a much clearer tone than a plectrum could ever give you.

It hurts alot though.

My word, dude, that's gotta be the coolest bass-related poem/story that I've ever heard! You should write a book or something....

John - that was really great!

Its funny how the people with the least amount of skill are usually the first to have a stupid comment - quickly revealing what they are made of.

Ouch.... your kidding right? "What a brilliant mind for writing such a long a stupid peom". If your talking about the abilitly to write stuff, ive been writing lyrics for all of my bands as well as some others. but you are right. When it comes to writing long, pointless, stupid peoms i dont have a whip of talent. Well, this is probly just going to get deleted by mister mod, but i dont care. Let him take free speach away. This place is seeming more like "Barney and friends" every day....

let me make one thing clear, pinhead, 'free speech' doesn't exist here. Talkbass is not a democracy, it's owned by an individual, and the constitution of the United States does not apply to it.

The only reason I'm letting your post stand is to give an example of what will be deleted in the future.

Fair warning.

Some people brag and some people do....?

PS - a "peom" ?!!! And is the "whip of talent" a mystical artifact used in a role playing game?

Hmmm when did even Technique succumb to flamethrowers Foolish Pollybass, one day, when you learn how to spell words such as "poem", "Fieldy" (Correctly spelled FiElDy I believe) and other one and two syllable words, you can move on to bigger words like, jack-ass (notice the hyphon?) and insolent (which is of course 3 syllables) maybe then you can come back and amaze us all. Speaking of no life, how hard up for conversation to you have to be to come into a thread and just bash on people since you obbiously have absolutly no interest in the topic at all. Go back to Off Topic and cry about it for a while until you're a big boy and are ready to come back and play.

Edit: Oh sorry if this needs to be deleted, I think I almost sunk to his level but It needed to be said. When do Mod's get corperal punishment rights?

Uhhhhhh oh yeah, there was a topic to this post

Anyway, the reason that I actually went to respond was to say that Chris Squire is a great example of some interesting picking techniques on a Ric, but I played a Mapleglo one in a music store with my fingers and started playing "The Fish" (the correct spelling of the real name of the song truely escapes me, but atleast its not the word poem..) with my fingers.. strangly.. the guy recognized the song but said it sounded crappy.. Now if you'll excuse my own self building super ego, that was one of the first songs I learned how to play. I've had it nailed down since I was playing a Squier Affinity P-Bass and IMNeverHO I'm pretty damn good at it. Bah! Play the rick with the pick or with your .....* it still sounds GREAT!

* = Sorry, Dr. Suess got into my brain there
