I usually only use 2 fingers. For triplets I'll use 3. I find I have to roll my wrist to add my pinky finger in there so it seems like wasted effort for something that doesn't really add to my technique.

I use three fingers for gallops and chugs in some of the death metal songs I play. But other than that...never used 4 fingers. Never seen it before.

Technically I use 5 fingers for slap though. Thump for slapping, pinky for my G, ring for my D, middle for my A, and pointer for my E (rarely use that one though).

I used to think that way about 4 also but it soon develops into a finger gallop where your hand doesn't necessarily roll but is learning to walk with four legs

nah'm sayin?

Heres how I see my hands when I play/how I play and how I learn to play

Fretting hand : a couple dancing tango Or just dancing(4finguz,4legz)

Plucking hand : again a couple dancing, over the strings, a galloping horse, (4finguz, 4legs)

Both hands : two couples enjoying a double date...lol, or a centipede (as in the middle finger plays with the other middle finger-pinky with pinky, etc.

I've got other ways that I've been building my technique-BUTT I'm better off making a video

Nah'm sayin?

I used to play with all four, but a few years ago had an accident cutting off about a half an inch off my pinky finger on my plucking hand. It has healed up but just doesn't reach right anymore. I am actually working on a "finger extension" kinda like what Tommy Iommi of Black Sabbath used. I found a steel guitar pick that reaches fine, but it doesn't sound right at all compared to the pad of a finger. Any ideas?

I thought the idea I had was kinda funny at first, but heck... What about an eraser?
Or take a pencil or something with a pad type thing at the end and tape it like an extension.

I'll look into it, your dilemma has tickled my goatee

I mostly use 1 finger. I sometimes use 2 when I'm crossing strings going from 4th string to 1st. I can usually stick with 1 finger when I cross strings going from 1st to 4th because it's more of a brush stroke rather than a pluck.
