Fret Buzz, bad frets? Action wrong?

Sign in to disble this ad
hello all!

I currently own an ibanez GSR, and am noticing small amounts of fret buzz when using a pick, it doesn't come through in my amp very often, a little more in the recording I do.

I was wondering, Is it possible to have the action to high? would it cause buzzing? because some people have said that my action is higher than usual. If not, I suspect it is either me being too aggressive with the pick, or the frets themselves.

Hey there, well if your action is pretty high and the neck has a forward bow is clear that frets don't buzz BUT careful because if the action is high on the first octave maybe let the frets of the upper octave to buzz because there, the action is to low, if you wanna keep the action that way so you need to raise the saddle. Other wise you can lower little bit the action and have a more equal tension on the neck. Another cause of buzzing can be some bad fret or maybe sometimes if you play hard with fingers/pick can be the string that hit the neck pickup.
Cheers. Enrico

Where on the neck is the buzzing most prominent?
How high is your action exactly?
What kind of bow does your neck have?
Also, are you positive it isn't a technique issue? Such as not fretting hard enough, or playing too hard?

I'd say it's not 'typical' for an Ibanez GSR to have bad frets. Their QC and building is quite good and I've yet to see an Ibanez of any of their lines with significantly bad anything, let alone frets to this point in my lifetime.

OK - that sound COULD be a bad set up - but first take a serious look at the neck for dips and curves.

USE A FLAT EDGE to make it conclusive, assuming the frets are pretty good.

If you find a dip or rise to the neck then you're gonna have to do the setup around that problem after you've exhausted all the options with the truss rod adjustment.

Seriously here - Ibanezessesses are not typically gonna have much in the way of neck 'issues'. They are all pretty good in that arena.

Are you sure that the strings themselves aren't a problem? I've heard twisted or loosely wrapped strings make some pretty oddball noises.

Picking is one sure way to bring out the harmonics that can make a string (that's maybe right on the cusp of rattling) to really ring out too.

As an owner of an Ibanez GSR200EX, there are two issues I would like bring to your attention. The first is the build quality. For the price I paid (230 Euros) it is rather good. The second issue is the setup. The setup of my Ibby was simply bad. I tweaked the truss rod and set the action and intonation. The hight of the elements was also readjusted. Having done all this, it is a good and reliable bass. If strings are hitting the fretboard, it may be caused by picking a little too heavyly. Light gauge strings also tend to rattle a little easier, as their tension is lower. The action I use on my Ibby varies from 2.8 mm for the low E to 2.2 mm for the G. However, this is just the action I seem to prefer. Anything between some 2 and 3.5 mm (E string) will do.
