fret buzz technique?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm having a problem with fret buzz - I'm not sure if it's my technique or my bass.
is it normal to get buzz if you don't push down hard enough?
I've been converted from guitar, so I'm not used to pushing so hard. Do all bassists really have to thump down the strings in order to stop buzz?

my pinky hurts!

Yes, you have to puch a bit harder, but not too much...you are trying to play bass, not strangle it.
It could be either technique or the bass...Are your fingers right on the inside of the frets?
It could be the setup for the bass...is the action too low?
Is the buzz only coming from certain spots on the neck?

It could be caused by any number of things...more info would be helpful.

Yes, it is.

Fret buzz can be caused from poor action on a bass, but if you are converting from guitar, technique may be the first problem to address. Consistant practice will soon eliminate the buzzing. Once you get a feel for how much pressure you need to exert, it becomes second nature......and you pinky won't hurt anymore.

[EDIT] Yeah, what chrismmc said. Man I need more coffee.
