I have a session coming up doing some demos with just (rather busy) piano and drums...the songwriter asked me to add some fretless

How does one get the mwah and who are some good examples?

Jaco (of course), Pino Palladino (sp?), Gary Willis, among others.

The "Mwah" comes from a combination of technique and bass tone.

Get Paul Simon - Graceland. Baghiti Khumalo has just about my ideal fretless tone. All songs done on a fretless.

All the bass on The Mars Volta's 'Frances the Mute' is fretless, noticably 'The Widow'. And I also recomend the obvious Jaco.

Adjust the blend to favor the bridge pickup on the Lakland, and boost the mids a bit to bring out the gorgeous, gorgeous mwah.

you can also get a nice mwah by plucking gently over the fingerboard rather than between the fingerboard and the bridge, as normal.

from the lows,

Stew
