Fretless Positioning Q

If you want to use the side dots as guides while playing, are you supposed to play "on the dot" so to speak or slightly towards the nut?

If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.

it can differ depending on the bass, i suppose that you are talking about an unlined bass with the dots where the frets would be, usually on the dot is the idea,

Get the bass intonated and then finger where it sounds the most in tune.

The dots are only for reference; use your ear to play in tune.

Play by ear.

And that is what I actually do. On my particular bass, proper intonation is slightly in front of the dot (towards the nut) so I am imagining that the dots mark where the "fret is" and not where the "dot is" on a fretted bass. It's not a problem to me until I get higher up the neck where the intonation gets "bunched up". Anyway, the reason that I ask is because I am contemplating getting another fretless and I am wondering if there maybe a universal/rule of thumb INRE to these side dots.
